Biography

Philip draws inspiration from the landscape and nature around him and for the last decade he has focused on his local patch of military owned Surrey heathland, exploring different aspects of its nature and landscape as well as the effects of the military.

Drawing and photography are central to his practice; using these as a starting point to reduce and abstract marks where necessary through a series of sketches and paintings he often works from figurative to abstract and back again, combining what eludes to a fluid painting style, but containing a more rigid drawing technique, highlighting both the paint and pencil marks. The abstract work is a slow and delicate process. In 2020 he was awarded an Arts Council grant to allow continued experimentation with this process, introducing new techniques such as silverpoint and embroidery.

Philip lives and works in Surrey and is currently Artist in Residence at Barfield School, Farnham.
